Health research study: Laughter Yoga on dialysis
Laughter Yoga Australia collaborated with Deakin University to measure the effect of Laughter Yoga on patients during dialysis treatment for kidney disease.
We took Laughter Yoga into a haemodialysis centre in Melbourne, Australia, running 30-minute Laughter Yoga sessions, incorporating breathing, relaxation techniques and induced laughter, 3 times a week over 4 weeks. The university researchers measured the effect of Laughter Yoga on:
- respiratory function
- stress
- anxiety
- depression
- quality of life
- mood
- wellbeing.
Our Laughter Yoga sessions resulted in:
- decreased intradialytic hypotension
- improved mood
- enhanced optimism
- less stress.
Laughter Yoga was found to be a safe, inexpensive, accessible and low-intensity form of physical activity bringing physical and mental health benefits to kidney dialysis patients.
